Expect a kaleidoscope of experiences, from the electrifying rhythms of “Rhythm Ride: A Road Trip through the Motown Sound” to the soulful spirit of “Alvin Ailey”. Experience the vibrant legacy of “Duke Ellington,” the Caldecott Award-winning and Coretta Scott King Award medal-winning masterpiece, and discover the indomitable spirit of Ella Fitzgerald through “Ella Fitzgerald: The Tale of a Vocal Virtuosa” and “Ella Fitzgerald: She Persisted.”
But this isn’t just a reading – it’s a full-fledged performance! Get ready for storytelling magic, group singalongs, percussive grooves, scat singing workshops, gospel harmonies, poetry in motion, captivating images, and a dash of theatricality. The Pinkneys will have your children tapping their toes, moving to the beat, and leaving with hearts full of rhythm and minds buzzing with creative inspiration.
This program is designed for children ages 6-12 and their families, with only 100 seats available. Pre-registration is required. Admission for non-members is $10 and free for members. Every child receives a special souvenir – an autographed book from Andrea and Brian Pinkney themselves!All school age children welcome to embark on a journey of discovery this Black History Month with our engaging children’s program, where community partners join hands to celebrate African American leaders,’ arts, and culture. In addition to our pre-registered author performance, we welcome you to join the celebration in the museum gallery. With collaborative crafts and activities children will have the opportunity to express their creativity and learn about the rich tapestry of black history. Join us for a day filled with unity, education, and empowering activities that highlight the incredible contributions of African Americans throughout history. All activities align with the museum author visit from 11am -1pm.
