About Binghamton Center for Writers

The Binghamton Center for Writers is an organized research center of Binghamton University (SUNY) associated with the university's creative writing program in the Department of English. While academic courses are handled through the English department, the Center for Writers cultivates an active community of writers through extracurricular offerings such as the Readers' Series, The Writing Life: Conversations with Editors Series, The Binghamton Poetry Project, Harpur Palate literary magazine, student awards for creative writers, the Binghamton Book Awards, the Literati Writers Series, Writing by Degrees Creative Writing Conference, and other opportunities. Creative Writing at Binghamton University has a storied history, developed through the efforts of Milton Kessler, extended by the vision of John Gardner, and supported over the years by the likes of Larry Woiwode, Heather McHugh, Ai, Ruth Stone, John Vernon, Arthur Clements, Barry Targan, and our current faculty Maria Mazziotti Gillan, Leslie Heywood, Liz Rosenberg, Jaimee Wriston Colbert, Thomas Glave, Alexi Zentner and Joe Weil, the Binghamton University Creative Writing Program is proud of the writers who have studied and are studying here.
