Henry Purcell based his first opera on the story of Dido, queen of Carthage, and the prince of Troy, Aeneas. Considered the first masterpiece of English opera, the opera was first performed in 1689. With a magnificent final lament, scenes of sorcery and spirits, sailors tell the tale of the love and abandonment of Dido by Aeneas. Conducted by David Moody (Juilliard School of Performing Arts faculty) and directed by Tommy Iafrate (Binghamton University Department of Theatre faculty).
The opera will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 29 and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 31 in the Anderson Center Chamber Hall.
