The Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra is billing “Restless Oceans,” the first concert of its 2024-25 season, as a “thrilling program of music from across two centuries that celebrates the healing power of nature.”

The concert Saturday (Sept 28) takes its title from the opening piece, Restless Oceans, by the celebrated young Anglo-American composer Anna Clyne, which connects the sounds of the natural world with the resilience of the human spirit.

Also on the program are Richard Strauss’s witty and joyful Horn Concerto No. 1, which uses the French horn to evoke the ancient sounds of the hunt and features the Philharmonic’s principal horn, Alex Shuhan, as soloist. The concert finishes with Beethoven’s famous hymn to nature and its restorative powers, his Symphony No. 6, the “Pastorale.”

The performance, led by Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Daniel Hege, will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Broome County Forum Theatre in downtown Binghamton. There will be a pre-concert chat, “Sound and Vision in Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony,” at 6:30 p.m. with Dr. Julia Grella O’Connell, the Philharmonic’s Director of Education and Community Engagement.
