Sophocles’ Antigone has been a beacon of poetic drama since the fifth century B.C. In his gripping adaptation, Nobel Prize winning playwright and poet Seamus Heaney exposes the humanity and darkness of Sophocles’ compelling masterpiece. In war-torn Thebes, Antigone learns that her brothers have killed each other in battle. Creon, King of Thebes (and Antigone’s uncle), grants burial for one brother, but forbids it for the other who is considered an enemy of the state. Creon threatens death to anyone who disobeys his decree. Does Antigone have the courage to defy her uncle? Will she risk her life in pursuit of justice? Will Creon listen to reason before it’s too late?
