At the Broome County Arts Council (BCAC), six student artists from area high schools have won awards in “An Artistic Discovery Broome County Congressional High School Art Competition.   They now advance to the final round of competition sponsored by U.S. Representative Richard Hanna for high schools in the 22nd Congressional District.  Hanna will present final awards April 18th at Binghamton’s Roberson Museum and Science Center.

Best in Show

In the county competition sponsored by BCAC, Genevieve Mecklenborg, of Binghamton High School, won the Best in Show Award for her colored pencil portrait “Kyung Soo”. Also from Binghamton, Maura M. Hager took the Line and Color Award for her pencil drawing “Horse Farm”.  Georgia Baker of Harpursville Central School won the Use of Media award for her graphite drawing “A Hero of Punk”. The Composition Award went to Brooke Angelo of Vestal for her acrylic painting “Purple”. Luke Dionne of Chenango Valley won the Originality Award for his charcoal work “Invisible Wounds”.  And Maine-Endwell’s Marjorie Donohue won the Level of Difficulty Award for a work in ink, entitled “Linear Glow Still Life”.

Altogether, nine area high schools — including Deposit, Seton Catholic, Union-Endicott, and Whitney Point — participated in the county competition.   An exhibition of all the student entries to “An Artistic Discovery Broome County” will continue through April 3rd at the Broome County Arts Council, 81 State Street, Suite 501, Stephens Square Building, Binghamton, The gallery in open from 11:00am – 5:00pm Monday through Friday, or by appointment.   For more information, call 607-723-4620 or e-mail information@broomearts.org.
