If you want to feel great about the state of arts education in Broome County, you should make every effort to attend a performance this weekend of the annual spring dance program at Binghamton High School. Four Elements features everything from African to pop, jazz to ballet, hip-hop to modern.
Under the direction of Karen Koyanagi-De Luca, students from the Rod Serling School of the Arts, the International Baccalaureate program and a clapping, stomping crew called Tazama all dance together in a program that celebrates earth, air, fire and water. The cast features those just learning the joy of dance and those who have made it their passion. Community contributors include WillowDanse, whose members dance in the finale.
Binghamton is the only district in this part of New York that has a dance program, and students are given a certificate from the state upon completion. All proceeds from the performances will benefit the BHS Dance Department.
IF YOU GO: Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. today (April 26) and Saturday (April 27) in the Helen Foley Theatre of Binghamton High School, Main and Oak streets, Binghamton. Admission is $8 (seniors and students, $5; ages 5 and under, free). Information: Call 762-8202.
