Bronzissimo! rings in holiday spirit
Bronzissimo! select handbell choir performed its winter concert last Saturday (Dec. 18) at Memorial Park Baptist/St. Andrew's Anglican Church in Vestal. The program featured familiar sacred, secular and classical holiday music. Flute, oboe, English horn, organ and percussion instruments complemented the handbells.

St. Petersburg Men's Ensemble sings of Russian traditions
The St. Petersburg (Russia) Men's Ensemble presented a concert of a cappella Russian sacred and folk music Dec. 4 at First United Methodist Church in Endicott. The group, consisting of tenors Evgeny Vishnevsky and Vadim Smantsev, baritone and director Kirill Sokolov and bass Sergey Shapinskiy, sang an antiphon, troparion and other sacred anthems and liturgical music, including the Kedrov Otce Nas (Lord's Prayer). The second half of the program featured 10 traditional Russian folk songs, including the familiar "Carol of the Bells" by Mykola Leontovych.
'Alto on the Loose' heats up Firehouse Stage
Mezzo-soprano Hilerie Klein-Rensi and pianist Pej Reitz combined forces to present their fourth staging of "Alto on the Loose" Sunday (Dec. 5) at the Schorr Family Firehouse Stage. Klein-Rensi sang more than 20 show tunes -- some silly, some serious, some sublime -- all to illustrate the point that, while sopranos are the darlings of song, altos often portray more interesting, complex roles in musical theater. Reitz accompanied with her usual exuberance and intensity.
University Symphony offers a slice of Americana
The Binghamton University Symphony, under direction of Timothy Perry and student conductors Heather Worden and Zachary Nobile Kampler, presented a program Dec. 4 of music by American composers Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Morton Gould, Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin. Spanning a period of just 25 years (1935 to 1955), the pieces showed influences of the American West, African-American jazz and Latin rhythms. The concert showcased a number of instruments from the 78-member orchestra.
A fine and fitting farewell for Madrigal Choir's founder
An overflow crowd filled the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity on Sunday (Nov. 28) to hear the Madrigal Choir of Binghamton's Lessons and Carols for Christmas, Anne Boyer Cotten's farewell concert. It was a fine and fitting send-off from a choir and a community grateful for the her gift of high-quality a cappella music for 33 years.
