Afghan artist Sharifa Sharifi (Elja) will show images of her provocative artwork that celebrates female beauty and desire in a culture in which beauty must remain hidden and where desire can lead to death. “The goals of my paintings are to advocate for women, to show women breaking the rules, and to fight against the Taliban and religious extremism in Afghanistan.” Elja will also talk about growing up in Afghanistan and Iran and her year-long journey from Herat, Afghanistan to Ithaca, NY where she is currently a visiting scholar at Cornell’s Johnson Museum.
