In a world ripe with broken social systems, alt_ Chicago seeks to be an alternative to the narrative, celebrating and uplifting community. Rather than letting outside forces drive their fate, alt_ yields to their background in art and faith to build a platform where creativity becomes a powerful driving force within communities. Through cultural development, community-driven initiatives and groundbreaking exhibitions, alt_ sparks neighborhood-based dialogue that inspires everyone to contribute their voice, to communicate compassionately and to collaboratively develop inventive, self-sufficient community systems.

Bio:

alt_ is a contagious, artist-led engine (501c3) that undertakes tangible acts of service, using art and faith as tools that galvanize impassioned, self-sufficient communities to join in, at a time when past and present injustices spur us to collectively imagine our best future.

A collaboration between Jon Veal and Jordan Campbell, alt_ was incepted by the two artists in response to the trauma of surrounding communities and the belief that art could be used as a tool for healing. Campbell’s family history of entrepreneurship and Veal’s lifelong passion for art met in a resolution to positively disrupt their communities through tangible acts of service.

Since its inception, alt_ has expanded into an artist-led, Chicago-based non-profit that is dedicated to revitalizing communities through art and culture. alt_ provides an alternative to the dominant cultural narrative, manifesting new opportunities in a time of need on the South and West Sides of Chicago.
