Binghamton 2 Degrees is looking for artists to present work that inspires thought, action, and/or ethical engagement with the climate change crisis and, especially, its relationship to the local context of upstate New York’s human communities and/or natural and human environments. Binghamton 2 Degrees: Live at Confluence Park is a community arts and music festival for artists in the Southern Tier whose work explores the issue of place and climate change broadly conceived. The inaugural 2023 festival was attended by over 800 individuals, providing substantial exposure for participating artists.

The festival will be a family-friendly event that will include live music, art, a creative writing contest, and organizations working towards building community resilience. This event aims to annually serve as a catalyst to motivate advocacy for policy reform, the creation of mutual aid networks, and the inspiration to take action in whatever way makes sense to individuals.

Visual arts at the 2024 Binghamton 2 Degrees: Live at Confluence Park will be anchored to the creation of a participatory three-dimensional collage led by environmental artist Steven Siegel.

Environmental art projects that qualify for this program may focus on the following themes within the context of climate change, but are not limited to them.

● Climate change/climate collapse
● Climate resilient communities
● Climate adaptation
● Regeneration
● Eco-social engagement
● Decarbonization
● Ecofeminism
● Systems-restoration
● Interspecies relationships
● Natural or built systems
● Recycling, repurposing, or upcycling
● Clean energy production
● Bioplastics

Artist proposals may take one or more of the following, or other, forms:

● Presentation of new or existing work(s)
● Sale of art
● Workshops or demonstrations

We will have a juried competition at the event. The three prizes will be $500 for first place, $300 for second, and $200 for third place. There is a $20 entrance fee for this competition.

– The first prize winner will also be showcased at the Broome County Arts Council. Up to nine artists will be selected in the first round to exhibit their work at the festival and compete for the prizes.
– Accepted artists will be provided a space under a canopy for exhibiting your work on the day of the festival. We will provide a table, canopy, and chairs which will be located either in Confluence Park or the Riverwalk along the Chenango River north of the park along the path from festival parking. You may propose a different use of space within Confluence Park for consideration.
– You must be present to discuss your work with attendees the day of the festival. We particularly welcome interactive aspects of your work such as demonstrations that would engage families and kids in art.
