EJ’s Town –
The Endicott Johnson Story
A New Approach to Local History
By Lucas Kaczynski, Local Historian
Artist and Author
Local history is among the most relevant, relatable and
important forms of historical study, yet most people live
their daily es without truly understanding the roots of
their community. Young people and children especially
can benefit from an early introduction to local history
as a means of forming identity and a connection to their
community. EJ’s Town: The Endicott Johnson Story Is a
fully illustrated children’s book about the glory days of the
great Endicott Johnson Shoe Corporation. Through its
pages, black and white historical photos are recreated
in color with a touch of whimsy, transporting readers
to a bygone world of tanneries and factories, swimming
pools and carousels, and the benevolent industrialist
behind it all.
Lucas Kaczynski is a local historian, artist, author, teacher
and collector whose focus is on local stories, business
and industry. He graduated from Maine-Endwell schools
and SUNY Cortland, and currently teaches 10th and 11th
grade social studies at Owego Free Academy. He enjoys
painting and has a large collection of Endicott Johnson,
IBM, and other local memorabilia including metal signs,
oil cans and artifacts related to the oil industry and the
classic American gas station.
