First exhibition of 2021 at Roberson Museum to open.
Roberson Museum and Science Center is pleased to announce the opening of Word and Image: The Art of Jules Gotay on February 5. This vibrant body of work showcases drawings and paintings, each conceived from a poem.
“I begin with a poetic title and try to explain it visually,” Jules Gotay writes. “By recreating it visually, I hope to concretize the idea. I want to create paintings that live on the outer edges of understanding, and open to endless interpretation.”
Gotay’s paintings use color to masterfully evoke a warm nostalgia. “The geometry that colors the sleep of stars”—a 24 x 36-inch oil painting on linen—pieces together shapes from a dream. The color palette is reminiscent of picture book bedtime story “Goodnight Moon,” which draws viewers in to further explore the intricate pieces of this dreamy realm.
Roberson is excited to bring this colorful exhibition to the Binghamton community, especially during the gloomier months of upstate New York winter.
This exhibition will be on view in Roberson’s first-floor gallery from February 5, 2021 – October 2021.
