Artist in Residence Program
The Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program allows Broome County Arts Council to transform the landscape of professional possibilities for emerging artists, by serving and promoting artists by providing an artist studio, time, professional support, and the opportunity to be featured through First Friday events. Each residency begins on the first of the selected month and extends until First Friday of the next month. Applicants must be at least 21 years old at the time of applying. Applicants must reside in Broome, Chenango, or Tioga counties.
If applicable, the Artisan Gallery will then help market these artists through opportunities to show and sell in the gallery, as well as co-host an individual First Friday opening & in-studio exhibition. Broome County Arts Council notes that access to an opportunity for professional mentorship and development often hinges on the ability to afford a studio, supplies, classes, and other associated costs. Therefore, awardees will be chosen based on merit and need, helping to support a diverse array of artists across socio-economic backgrounds, culture, age, education, and geography.
“This space is perfect for a local residency. I am here around my schedule, around childcare and work; I can use this studio as my home base, and also have access to my local resources – the city and landscape that I am used to. Having a dedicated space and especially dedicated time allows me to be really direct with what I am making, and be very specific in trying to treat it as an experimental time.”
“…since you guys (BCAC) were encouraging some sort of public engagement, I was able to produce work that are intended to interact with people during the Open Studio Saturday and the in-studio exhibition. I didn’t get much chances for that before, since I don’t have a studio space where I can invite people in; this residency made it possible. It was really nice to be able to try something different.”
