For Binghamton University’s annual dance program, opening tonight (Feb. 14) in the Anderson Center Chamber Hall, JoEllen Kuhlman has choreographed the Seven Deadly Sins. She said the concept came to her while listening the song “Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Ray, which she then used to choreograph “Pride.”
Coming up with music to accompany the sins of pride, greed, gluttony, lust, wrath, sloth and envy was a challenge, but she did it, and the dances, featuring seven women and three men, are exquisite and creative. (I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak at a rehearsal earlier this week.) Colorful costumes play an important part in the renderings of these concepts, with, for example, gold for greed, red for gluttony, blue for sloth and, of course, green, for envy.
Performances are 8 p.m. today and Saturday (Feb. 15) and 2 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 16). Tickets are available at the Anderson Center box office; call 777-ARTS.
It’s not a sin if you love dance and you miss this show, but it should be!
